Blueberry juice drink could improve brain function especially in older people, according to a study from the University of Exeter.
In the study, healthy people aged 65-74 years old who drank blueberry juice concentrated every day improves cognitive function, blood flow to the brain and brain activation during cognitive test.
There is also evidence that showed improvements in their working memory.
“Our cognitive function tend to decrease as you get older, but previous research has shown that cognitive functions can be maintained with a diet rich in plant foods,”says Dr. Joanna Bowtell, head of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter.
Of 26 healthy adults who are involved in the study, 12 of whom concentrated blueberry juice–mendapatkani–230 grams of blueberries, once in a day. While the rest received only a placebo.
Before and after the period of study for 12 weeks, the participants perform various cognitive tests while their brain function and cerebral blood flow was measured.
Results of the study showed, compared with the group that was given a placebo, those who consume blueberries shows significant increase in the activity of the brain, particularly in the area of the brain associated with cognitive tests.
“In this study we have shown that only 12 weeks consume 30 ml concentrated blueberry juice every day, the blood flow of the brain, brain activation and some aspects of working memory increased in healthy adults who are older,“ she chimes in.
Blueberries are rich in flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory. Flavonoids, which are abundant in plants, are likely to become an important component in causing effects memory improvement.
Previous research has shown that the risk of dementia can be reduced by the consumption of fruit and vegetables in amounts more. So as reported by Science Daily
